ASUG Presentation Recap: CHS

I recently had the pleasure of joining Krishna Vemulapalli from CHS at MN ASUG’s October Chapter Meeting, where we shared CHS’s SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) journey and the remarkable transformation underway, supported by Mindset. Krishna did a fantastic job of presenting this journey from CHS’s perspective, highlighting the real-world challenges and strategic solutions that BTP and Mindset have brought to their operations. In turn, I enjoyed the opportunity to present our exciting work with CHS on generative AI pilots and outline the process Mindset uses to support and accelerate a company’s journey into innovative solutions on BTP. The conversation allowed us to showcase how, with a mix of integration, governance, user experience, and advanced technologies like AI, we help companies like CHS achieve tangible, scalable results that extend their SAP investment and unlock new value.

CHS’s BTP Journey and Mindset’s Role

CHS, a leading player in agronomy, grain, and energy, had the complex challenge of integrating its vast SAP and SaaS landscape into a unified platform. Krishna detailed their need for integration solutions that would allow CHS to connect diverse applications—from SAP Fieldglass to SuccessFactors—and overcome the limitations of their existing on-premise and SaaS systems. CHS required solutions to manage security, streamline access for end-users, and provide centralized, real-time data analytics capabilities to drive informed decisions.

Mindset has supported CHS along this journey, providing the strategies and expertise needed to overcome each layer of complexity. By implementing SAP Identity Authentication Service (IAS) and SAP Cloud Identity Access Governance (IAG), Mindset has enabled CHS to create a unified authentication experience where all applications are accessible in a single, secure location – enabled using SAP Build Work Zone. These clean-core practices support seamless upgrades and long-term scalability, protecting CHS’s investment in SAP and preparing them for continuous growth.

Enabling Innovation with Generative AI

Closing the presentation, I shared how Mindset is pioneering AI solutions to enhance SAP environments, including two AI pilot initiatives we’re leading at CHS. Our work here focuses on leveraging AI to automate repetitive tasks, streamline processes, and embed intelligence into core operations, creating significant productivity gains. The Clean Core Advisor Bot, one of our AI pilots, supports CHS’ SAP developers by guiding them through the use and application of best practices in building applications. It’s a powerful tool for maintaining a clean core in SAP landscapes, ensuring that all customizations occur outside the core system or in well-supported patterns of use and maintenance within the core system that adhere to best practices. This bot helps developers maintain a lean system architecture, which is essential for supporting smooth upgrades and reducing future technical debt.

The second pilot, our ABAP and Fiori Testing Bot, focuses on enhancing code quality and efficiency by automating the testing process. This bot enables comprehensive test coverage and reduces the time developers spend on manual testing. Not only does this help to improve code quality, but it also speeds up deployment times, allowing developers to focus on strategic initiatives rather than repetitive testing tasks. Both bots are built on Mindset’s Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) framework, which provides an adaptable foundation for future AI-powered solutions across other functions.

These AI tools represent an exciting future for organizations just starting their AI journey. For companies that may not yet have AI expertise in-house, Mindset’s approach to enablement and innovation minimizes risks while providing a tangible entry point to leverage AI in meaningful ways. Our strategy begins with AI Discovery Workshops, where we help clients pinpoint high-impact areas, then move to targeted implementations through Proof of Concept (PoC) projects. This structured approach lets companies build confidence in AI solutions gradually while keeping control over scope and costs.

Supporting Every Step of the BTP and AI Journey

In working with CHS and other clients, we aim to provide end-to-end support on the BTP journey, ensuring seamless transitions from initial enablement to full-scale implementation. Our BTP services cover key areas such as strategic enablement, governance, integration, and clean core practices. For example, we help companies migrate legacy systems, align BTP with specific business goals, and ensure optimized governance structures that allow for easier, more agile SAP landscapes. For organizations exploring AI, we focus on building robust foundational capabilities on BTP, enabling AI-driven applications to integrate directly within their SAP environment and providing scalability and flexibility for long-term innovation.

This holistic approach enables faster time-to-value and measurable business impact. With each implementation, we emphasize scalability, supporting our clients not just in deploying technology but in evolving alongside it. CHS’s journey with BTP and AI underscores Mindset’s commitment to creating solutions that are as adaptable as they are impactful, paving the way for future growth.

Ultimately, our goal at Mindset is to ensure that organizations like CHS can rely on a BTP foundation that supports immediate needs while remaining agile – poised for what’s next. With a strong BTP infrastructure and strategic use of AI, companies gain the flexibility to extend their SAP investments, reduce operational complexity, and unlock value across every facet of their business. As CHS continues its transformation, I look forward to the innovations and outcomes we’ll see as they embrace the full potential of their SAP landscape. We’d welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can enable the same for your organization!
